“I might…”
Possibility, hesitation, or a polite no?
Mary's model recording
0:00 / 0:00
Meaning
“It's possible that I will…”
What it can imply
It can be a real possibility, uncertainty, or a gentle way to avoid saying no. The context decides which.
Context and register
If someone says “I might [do that] .. ” with no details and changes the subject, don't plan around them. If they ask questions (“What time?” or “When?”), they are more likely to come.
In conversation
Real possibility
Lucy:Are you coming to the quiz on Friday?
Ana:I might — what time does it start? I'll check my shift.
Avoiding commitment
Lucy:Want to join the running club?
Ben:Ah, I might, yeah… one day.
Would I use this?
Yes, for honest uncertainty. If you want to be clear, add detail: “I might, but I'll confirm by Thursday.”
